Brief character sketch of Jake:

Senior software designer. Distrusts Megan and spoils Nic rotten. Really wanted JD to follow in his footsteps instead of Janice's and kind of resents that. For all intents and purposes, married into Janice's family since she had the estate, and has some insecurities about that. Was wealthy and upper class enough on his own, but, to his continual chagrin, is outdone by the horse farm. That his kids are all going to further that side of the family business feels like a personal slight to him and makes him feel irrelevent and like he's just a source of cash flow. Not the most open or warm or affectionate dad around, ergo JD's relationships with Adam and Louis, Jana's eager marriage, Nic's behavior, and Alice's aloofness. He "buys" Nic's loyalty, and she's more than willing to let him. This only worsens relationships with the other kids, who see right through it.

(Possibility that he's not the (older, at least) kids' biological father?)

Really, really hates it when Janice buys MORE animals, and would prefer that if she MUST, that they have a worthy pedigree (part of that inferiority thing). Rescues so don't count, which is a source of contention between him and Megan, since Megan gives Janice and JD that opportunity. Megan is unaware of this source, and no one else has put the pieces together (or will).

State of his and Janice's marriage relations: undecided.
